Despite the profound networking of information and communication technology known as Industry 4.0 promising enormous economic potential, the reality is different. The ever-increasing technological opportunities available are currently being used primarily for the internal optimisation of existing processes. However, data-based process improvement alone does not constitute a new, data-based business model. At best, digital offerings represent a niche market in the service portfolios of companies. The focus here is predominantly on the standard transaction-based sales of machines, equipment and products, as well as the classic aftersales services. Digital transformation within the manufacturing industry is thus stagnating.
